Industrial Waste Disposal
SKB Environmental is at the forefront of tackling PFAS contamination with our innovative solutions. In 2024, we installed a full-scale PFAS pre-treatment system at the SKB Rosemount landfill, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Minnesota and the Nation. Modern lined landfills are part of the solution to responsibly managing PFAS containing waste streams.
With the addition of this state-of-the-art system designed to efficiently remove PFAS from landfill leachate, SKB intends to be the industry leader in the safe and responsible management of PFAS wastes.
SKB Disposal Facilities
Built in 1992, the state-of-the-art SKB Rosemount disposal facility is the only one of it’s kind in Minnesota—meeting and exceeding the most stringent federal and state regulations. Facility safeguards include dual synthetic liners, an impermeable clay liner, and two leachate collection systems.
All waste delivered to the facility must have prior approval for disposal. Our on-site lab and resident chemist check each delivery against its pre-approved "fingerprint." This allows SKB to verify that the waste at the gate is the same waste that was pre-approved. SKB's computerized tracking system documents chain-of-custody as well as the precise coordinates of disposal. SKB operations personnel are all certified landfill operators.
SKB’s Lansing Landfill located in Austin, MN is also permitted to accept industrial waste and serves industrial waste generators in Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa. Like our industrial waste landfills, SKB Lansing has been designed and constructed to meet or exceed Federal Subtitle D landfill design standards.
In addition to our top tier disposal services, SKB can also assist customers by arranging transportation services, site remediation, and laboratory services to meet their needs.
Design Safeguards
SKB Rosemount was designed and constructed to provide the highest level of environmental protection. The design standards for the SKB Rosemount facility exceed Federal Subtitle D and State standards for industrial waste facilities. Each cell at the facility is lined with a triple liner system. The primary 80 mil HDPE liner, underlain by a 60 mil HDPE secondary liner, underlain by a tertiary liner consisting of clay or Claymax®.
The robust design incorporates two leachate collection systems with all leachate being treated at a wastewater treatment plant adjoining the site. In the unlikely event of a leak in the primary liner, the secondary liner system allows for immediate detection, collection of leachate, and repair of the liner without risking environmental health.
An extensive network of groundwater monitoring wells is regularly sampled to test up and down gradient water quality.
Waste Acceptance
All wastes received at the SKB Rosemount facility must have a pre-acceptance profile completed and authorized prior to delivery. Incoming waste is inspected, sampled, and compared with manifests and with its pre-acceptance profile.
SKB Rosemount will perform a pre-acceptance review which includes a chemical and physical profile of the material and a description of the process from which the waste is generated. A TCLP test and representative sample of the material must be provided prior to delivery and the generator must certify that the material is non-hazardous. Additional data may be required. The laboratory analyses can be provided by the generator or may be conducted as a service arranged through SKB.
Upon arrival, all incoming loads are inspected for physical appearance (texture, color, etc) and compared with the pre-acceptance waste profile. The piece count and contents are checked against shipping papers to verify accuracy. In addition, a sample of the material is taken for on-site laboratory analyses and confirmatory testing. Rejected loads are either returned to the customer or shipped to an alternate appropriate disposal site at the customer's request and expense.
SKB Rosemount quality control ensures that strict waste acceptance protocols are followed at all times. Regulatory agency inspections are conducted to ensure environmental protection procedures are followed. We believe that quality assurance provides peace of mind for our customers.
