SKB Rich Valley Facility - Design SafeguardsSKB’s Rich Valley Demolition Landfill was the first lined C & D landfill in Minnesota. Liners protect the environment from potential pollutants. Rich Valley’s liner system exceeds Federal and State requirements. Rich Valley’s liner system consists of a barrier layer and a drainage / protective layer. The bottom barrier layer consists of 2 feet of compacted clay. Clay is a highly impermeable material that prevents pollutants from entering the groundwater. Clay also displays self-mending properties that ensure protection from puncture. The drainage / protective layer consists of a 2-foot protective sand layer overlain a 1-foot drainage sand layer. All leachate is collected, tested, and properly disposed of in an approved facility.
SKB also conducts groundwater monitoring to test water quality. These tests provide a method to constantly monitor the ground water entering the facility and its quality leaving the facility, thus providing needed information as to whether a liner system is performing properly.
